"Hi there to whoever is reading this. My name is Denise Ohs and I competed in a Biggest Loser competition run by the Central Canterbury News. Denise
Apart
from a bit of tiredness I felt great! The regular exercise gave me a
lot more energy and by following a low GI eating plan I found I lost my
wicked craving for chocolate!

Successful Goal Setting
The beginning of a new year can be a time full of hope, dreams and inspiration for a new, improved way of life. We decide it is time to get fit, lose weight, quit smoking, get organised, rediscover a passion or interest, improve our relationships or find that ideal job. We devote our time and energy to making new years resolutions, sometimes making the same resolutions year after year, only to discover they are often unsuccessful and ineffective.
One of the main reasons goals and new years resolutions are often ineffective is failure to plan. To be successful with your goals, it helps to:
* Have a strong initial commitment to make a change and a strong self belief that you can do it.
* Have coping strategies in place to deal with problems that will come up.
* Follow through and keep track of your progress. The more monitoring you do and feedback you get the better.
* Plan your goals in advance. Do not leave them until the last minute.
* Write down your goals using positive language.
* Eliminate negative self talk. Learn to quieten or ignore that little voice in your head that keeps talking you down.
* Visualise the end result, using your emotions to really see and feel the joy and satisfaction of achieving what you want.
* Be specific. Know exactly what you want to achieve. Write each goal down somewhere it can be seen regularly e.g. diary or goal planner, vision board
* Ensure your success can be measured so you know you have achieved what you set out to do. Review and monitor your progress weekly. If you slip up, refocus and get back on track quickly.
* Make sure your goal is something you actually want to achieve. Eliminate negative self talk and feelings of guilt, should, and have to.
* Set realistic goals. Break down your ultimate goal into smaller goals when necessary. Challenge yourself when setting goals but not to the extent that they become unrealistic.
* Establish a time frame for when your goal will be achieved, or break it down into several steps towards achieving your overall goal.
* Ensure you are working towards something enjoyable, or you are enjoying what you are doing. Goals are designed to motivate and inspire you to achieve what you want.
* Reward yourself when you reach your goal, or along the way as you progress. Have fun and enjoy your goals. Focus on what you do achieve rather than beating yourself up for what does not get done.
How would it feel to realise your full potential? Employing successful goal setting techniques will help turn your aspirations into reality. Set yourself up for success and live the life you want.
